Bringing History to Life with Augmented Reality

The Tampere pilots use CitiVerse to bring culture and history to life through immersive digital experiences. From interactive public art maps and extended reality (XR) enhanced exhibitions to interactive storytelling of the 1918 Civil War, citizens and visitors can explore Tampere’s heritage in engaging new ways.

The pilots foster cultural participation, education, and creative expression by integrating XR into museums and public spaces.

Ella’s story: : Her City’s History Comes Alive

“Ella, a 13-year-old from Tampere, struggled to stay engaged in history class – until a visit to Tampere Cathedral changed everything. Through a mixed-reality guide, she witnessed what around 1,700 civilians lived through in 1918, walking their routes, hearing their stories, and seeing the city as they did. She left feeling moved, empathetic, and genuinely connected to her city’s past—turning history into her favourite subject.
